mr_grumpyface: (two worlds pressed together)

Setting coordinates on the TARDIS was an art. Anyone could call it a science, they could put anything they wanted into books and manuals, but to truly fly a TARDIS properly, one had to have the passion, the muse, the pure fire that came with a love of travel.

They also needed a hand brake, which the Doctor just accidentally pulled out of the TARDIS during a spot of high turbulence.

"This isn't going to be pretty!" he called over the console, working to initiate an air-brakes procedure that he hadn't actually managed before. It couldn't be that hard, though. Could it?

"Hold on!" He tugged a few more switches, and the TARDIS landed, roughly, about where he wanted.

"There! That wasn't so bad!"

"You got a better idea?" he demanded. "On three. One, two, three---"

And he let go.

She was about to answer him, but all that came out was a scream as they fell.

While the water of the previous river was cold, this was hot, like a very warm bath. He hit it preparing for the cold, so the warmth half-stunned him as he went under. He kicked against the current and aimed for the surface, keeping Amy close.

He sputtered when he took in a breath of air.

"You see? Not so bad!"

While he was expecting something, Amy wasn't sure what to expect. It seemed that everything she thought she knew about was proven wrong and she just needed to let things happen. When they hit the water, she wanted to push herself from him so he didn't have to worry about bringing her up to the surface as well, but the rope was keeping her from doing that.

She tried to help as much as she could and took in a deep breath when they finally reached the surface.

"How long before some nasty tentacle creature comes after us?"

"Not long! Let's get to shore before it does!"

He paddled towards the nearest muddy bank and climbed up, suit sticking to him and his hair a floppy mess. Also, mud. But it was good mud, the kind rich in all sorts of fascinating antioxidants.

He stepped over to the edge and looked down to the other world, where the speck that was the TARDIS floated downstream.

"She'll make landfall soon."

She was filthy, again, but this was nothing compared to being inside the mouth of the Star Whale; it was just mud and she could deal with that.

"Now what are we going to do, Doctor?"

"Don't know yet, working on it," he said. He pulled out the sonic and gave the mud around them a quick wave. His eyes widened.

"Oh dear," he said. "That's---oh dear."

"What is it?" She didn't like the sound of that. Oh, how she didn't like the sound of that. It old her that she was standing in something that she didn't want to be in, but she wanted to keep believing that it was just mud.

"Amy," the Doctor said, extending one hand out to her. "We're going to need to move out of this area very quickly but very carefully, do you understand?"

The words 'very extremely not good' kept playing in his mind over and over like a mantra.

"Doctor, tell me what's going on," she said as she took his hand and started to move.

"Please, tell me. I hate when you lave me in the dark."

"Well, this soil is extremely nutrient and antioxidant rich," he said, quickly leading them through the very wet mud and as quickly as he could away from the water's edge. "Very good for growing things, bit like a mother's womb."

He looked back at Amy to see if she understood what he was implying.

Amy listed as she always did; taking in as much of the information as she could and make sense of it. She almost stopped when he said that last bit and she cocked her head.

The wheels were turning, but she wasn't grasping the concept.

"Do you remember?" he asked, now looking very, very worried. "Where I said the serpents nested?"

Her eyes widened when it all clicked together. "We're there, aren't we? And they are coming for us."

"Oh, Amy, we're already here," he said. "Standing right on a dormant nest."

He gestured down, where white, slithery eggs bobbed just beneath the surface of the mud. Billions of them, each waiting to hatch a tiny serpent.

"So, as I said," he repeated, trying to sound calm. "Quickly but carefully."

"This is going to happen every time, isn't it," not that she minded, but she wanted to be a little more prepared than she was.

She attempted to manuver herself around the eggs; there was curiosity pinging her at the back of her head that wanted to examine the eggs, but she didn't. Instead she focused on the Doctor. "So, tell me something. Anything you want."

"What?" he asked, looking back. "What sort of something do you want to hear?"

"Anything, something to keep my mind off everything," she said and squeezed his hand.

The Doctor considered this for a very long moment, trying to work out what sort of a story would be the most calming. Maybe something significantly more terrible, just to show how very not-terrible this was? Maybe something funny, like a story about a manure planet or something.

In the end, he went for an old standby.

"Knock knock."

"Who's there?" She asked, it wasn't what she as hoping for, but she had a feeling that it would work.

"Banana," he said, because it was the only knock-knock joke he knew.

He felt something crack beneath his foot and he swallowed, but only just managed to keep his composure.

"Bana --" she paused when she heard the sound and fought back the lump that was forming in her throat.

"Banana who?"

"Knock knock," the Doctor said, unable to add any of the false cheeriness he had in his voice a moment earlier. Slithery somethings swam around his leg and he was petrified that if one of them bit, the rest would start to feed.

He slowly moved his leg forward. And another step. And another.

"Who's there?" Amy wasn't letting go of his hand, instead she maneuvered it so that her fingers were interlaced with his and she gave it another squeeze. Letting him know that she was there for him and that it would be alright. He told it to her, therefore she let it was only natural to tell him the same thing.

From: [identity profile] mr-grumpyface.livejournal.com
He looked back to her. Oh, Amy. He was supposed to be protecting her, but he kept getting her from one scrape into the other. And there she was, letting him know she was here for him. He gave her a small smile and held onto her hand.

"Banana," he said, pushing forward.
